I am in a season of life where I attend a lot of kids’ birthday parties. I’m betting a lot of you do too.

On the one hand, it's a good opportunity for propaganda. I keep a few copies of Bodies Are Cool and Big around to give as gifts.

I also like to use them as an opportunity to conduct ‘market research’; I play a game with myself to see how long it takes for someone to say something diet-culture-y or sometimes just straight up fatphobic (not long). "Why don’t they ever go for the healthy stuff?"; "No, you’re not having any more biscuits/crisps/chocolate"; or my favourite: forcibly prying food from the child’s hands.

The best parties though, are the ones where sugar is conspicuously absent.
